What actually is glycolic..?
Glycolic acid is part of the group of active compounds known as AHA’s (alpha hydroxy acids)- Derived from cane sugar, It has the smallest molecules in the group so is able to penetrate skin deeply and easily, making it the most effective for treating fine lines, acne, blackheads, dullness, oiliness etc
How does it work..?
Glycolic acid works like tiny little ‘packmen’ (you know the video game) that eat away at the glue between cells
It reacts with the top layer of skin, breaking it down by dissolving sebum and other substances that bind cells together, During the process dead skin cells are sloughed off resulting in brighter, smoother and younger looking skin.
All different products have different percentages of glycolic (always read the label)
What’s it good for..?
Glycolic is amazing for giving an even exofoliation, brightening skin, restoring healthy pH to skin, removing blackheads and fine lines, treating pigmentation , acne and other skin conditions
What to watch out for!
A percentage that is too high, used on skin that is not ready, can cause redness, irritation, ‘frosting’, pigmentation and thinned skin. Sun protection and proper knowledge is vital while using it- We would ALWAYS recommend you ease into any glycolic product eg. using every second day to build up skin’s tolerance)
It makes skin more sensitive to the sun so a high sun factor is a must and watch your percentages- anything over 10% glycolic is high and anything above 20% for an everyday product isn’t necessary (think quality not quantity!)
